Antique blue Sarouk, 8x10, c1910 Sarouk Lillihan, vegetable dyed wool, hand knotted, shades of indigo blue, pink, teal, orange with nice wear
Gorgeous early Sarouk Lillihan hand knotted village rug.
Blue field, pink border. Amazing colors, all organic dyes that have improved with time. Photographed outside, indirect light, colors take on beautiful shades at different times of day.
Rug dimensions are 10 ft x 8 ft 4 in
Unusual, atypical Lillihan, single wafted, possibly woven by an Armenian refugee . Many Armenians fled to sanctuary towns , Lillihan ( or Lillian) took in many of these refugees during the Ottoman invasion and genocide. The small human figure is atypical of Sarouks and gives clues to it’s Weaver.
Armenians were already well know for their Caucasian rugs.
Lillian at this time was producing carpets for the European and American markets. These floral motifs were immensely popular and still beautiful today.
